Winter Solstice Science

During these dark days, the earth, plants and animals are undergoing many changes. We'll explore how the earth's cycle affects our climate, our plantlife, and the animals. Then we'll mix our own concoction of fake snow.

Modeling the earth's movements in winter:

  • a narrow necked plastic bottle filled 1/4 of the way with vinegar
  • a blue (or any other color) balloon
  • a green permanent marker (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons of baking soda
  • a light source such as a flashlight or lamp
  • a ball of hardening clay & 2 toothpicks   

Making fake snow:

  • 1 cup of baking soda and 1/2 cup of water
  • 1 cup of cornstarch
  • 1 cup of hair conditioner (any brand) or hand lotion
  • a cookie sheet, metal tray, or alarge bowl for mixing and measuring     

Why do leaves change colors in fall experiment

  • an assortment of colored washable markers
  • a white coffee filter or a strip of paper towel, or toilet tissue
  • a cup of water
  • a pencil and a piece of scotch tape
