Marlon Brando studied acting with Stella Adler and Elia Kazan and created the role of Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire on Broadway. After going to Hollywood he concentrated on films and never performed on stage again. Many of his performances have become iconic, including Stanley Kowalski, Terry Malloy in On the Waterfront and Vito Corleone in The Godfather. He was noted as a male sex symbol of the 1950s and 1960s, his torn tee shirt and leather jacket became symbols of rebelliousness as well as notable fashion accessories. Brando’s career spanned 60 years and remains the yardstick American actors are still measured by today.
